PSNI launch festive crackdown on crime
19 December 2007
POLICE in Newry and Mourne have launched a festive crackdown on criminals and have issued key advice on how to have a safe and enjoyable holiday. As Christmas gets into full swing, high visibility beat patrols are being deployed during the festive season to provide reassurance to residents, shoppers, retailers and those enjoying a night out.

Officers will be patrolling in cars, on beat and on bikes around key shopping areas, nightlife spots and major car parks. Area Commander for Newry and Mourne Chief Inspector Sam Cordner said the measures are aimed at deterring and detecting criminals seeking to ruin Christmas.

“Christmas is a time for celebration and we want to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves but unfortunately it is also a busy time for burglars and thieves,” he said. “The high profile police presence is about creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone during the festive period but in addition to the many police measures in place, we would urge people to be vigilant and take care over the festive period.

“We would advise retailers to think seriously about their security and check their premises regularly for anything suspicious.” The Chief Inspector added People will have been spending their hard-earned money to buy presents for family and friends and we are keen to raise awareness about home safety and security.

“While police generally keep a sharp lookout for criminals over the festive season, there are a few things that householders can do to make their homes safer and prevent a break-in.” Police urged people to take the following precautions:
• Don’t leave gifts inside the car for all to see, take them with you or lock them in the boot out of sight.
• Be alert to the possibility of a thief snatching your handbag or mobile phone. Don’t keep all your money in one place
