THE Newry Democrat has been named Northern Ireland Weekly Newspaper of the Year 2005. At the annual Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Press and Media Awards in Belfast’s Europa Hotel on Friday evening, the paper was awarded the prestigious accolade for the second time in four years.
Paying tribute to this year’s winners, CIPR chairman Paul McErlean said: “This year’s big winners, Journalist of the Year Stephen Walker, Daily Newspaper of the Year The Irish News and Weekly Newspaper of the Year the Newry Democrat have set an extremely high standard and are fine examples of the excellence in journalism that we have come to expect in Northern Ireland.
” Tom Brennan, Newry Democrat CEO, said the award reflected the hard work and commitment from all associated with the paper. He said: “I am delighted for all our readers and advertisers, but in particular for our staff because I know the hard work and commitment they put in to delivering an excellent newspaper every week of the year. “This is not a one-off achievement.
We have proved this by winning the award for weekly newspaper of the year twice in the last four years, which testifies that the Newry Democrat is simply the best regional newspaper in the country.” Editor Jackie McKeown added:
“This extremely prestigious award recognises quality journalism and design and is very well deserved by the hard-working and talented Democrat team. We will continue to strive to uphold this standard which is not only a hit with the judges, but with all our loyal readers too.
” The awards ceremony, hosted by former RTE favourite Gay Byrne, saw the Irish News named Daily Newspaper of the Year, while the Sunday World scooped the Sunday Newspaper of the Year title and their reporter, Steven Moore, won the Journalist of the Year award following his exclusive on former DUP politician Paul Berry’s meeting with a gay masseur.
The Belfast Telegraph picked up awards for Website of the Year, Young Journalist of the Year (Claire Reagan) and Photographer of the Year (Ian Trevithick).
