Weather knocks back Banjo’s K2 trip
3 August 2005

Banjo Bannon’s trip to the top of K2 has been thwarted by weather conditions. Banjo phoned into the K2 official website yesterday to report that a second bid for the summit this season looks unlikely.

He stated that the extended weather forecast shows no break in the high winds and stormy conditions; however, he will attempt to return to camp three to collect his gear.

“Banjo began his ascent to camp three last night (Monday) and will be accompanied by several other climbers from expeditions at base camp who are also attempting to retrieve gear.

“If the climbers arrive at camp three and the conditions appear to have improved; they will attempt the summit. If the climbers arrive at camp three and find the weather is still poor; they are planning to return to basecamp and to leave K2 within the next ten days.

Banjo asks for everyone's support and continued prayers as he makes his journey up to camp three and with luckonwards,” said a spokesperson.

Last week Banjo reported that; “All teams in Base Camp are just waiting around for that elusive break in the weather. Having just come from an excellent dinner in the Norwegians tent, we all expect to wait for at least another week for a chance at the summit.

I send my thanks for all the continued support.” Due to time constraints, John Fitzgibbon had to leave Banjo last week to hopefully reach the summit on his own. Although it is now a solo attempt for the summit, John worked with Banjo to move equipment, fix ropes and establish Camps to allow such an attempt to take place.

Banjo said of John, “He will be sorely missed but is acknowledged for his part in this expedition.”
