THE home of an elderly Protestant man living in Newry has been targeted in what Sinn Fein MLA for Newry and Armagh Davy Hyland says may be a sectarian attack.
The widower, who lives alone in the Old Warrenpoint Road area of the city, was singled out during the early hours of Thursday morning when a missile was thrown through a window of his house. “This incident was completely wrong and totally out of order and I fear that it may have been sectarian.
Any hint of sectarianism must be utterly disagreed with,” Mr Hyland said. “This is an elderly gentleman who harms no-one and who lives on his own. It’s bad enough that his house was attacked in this way, but if it was a sectarian incident, then it is even worse.
” According to Mr Hyland, the attack on the house on the Old Warrenpoint Road could be linked to a number of other incidents which occurred in Newry early on Thursday and which he says left a ‘trail of destruction’ through the city.
In these, phone boxes were vandalised in Trevor Hill and Hill Street, while a red Renault Clio was burnt out in Kilmorey Street.
“It looks as if these people might have started their trail of destruction in Trevor Hill and gone on through the city before finishing up on the Old Warrenpoint Road,” Mr Hyland commented.
