Local postman Anthony Morgan has been commended for being ‘1st class,’ at the national finals of Royal Mail’s Postman of the Year competition, hosted by Chief Executive, Adam Crozier.
One of four national finalists from Northern Ireland, Anthony and his wife recently made the trip to London to be honoured at a national awards ceremony.
Despite not winning the national title of ‘Postman of the Year,’ this deserving nominee walked away with a cheque for £500, presented by actress Barbara Windsor. Adam Crozier said:
“All the finalists are outstanding examples of why communities throughout the UK value their postmen and women so highly and why these awards are so important, not only to Royal Mail, but to our customers. I am delighted that our unsung heroes can have their turn in the limelight. They truly are 1st Class People.” Barbara Windsor praised Royal Mail, saying:
“When I was quite ill recently, the postie was my lifeline, delivering letters and get well cards which were a real inspiration to me. “I am sure that every postman is as valuable to other people as they are to me and too often their contributions to the community go unnoticed.” Anthony, who hails from Newry said, “It has been an honour to be nominated.
I believe that if you can give something to your community, you should. However, it is appreciated that customers thought my local fundraising efforts were worthy of a national award.
I enjoyed my time in London and, of course, it was great to meet Barbara Windsor in person!” Michael Kennedy, Area General Manager for Royal Mail in Northern Ireland, hosted a reception for all local nominees on Thursday 24 March.
At this event, the four finalists were joined by another fourteen Royal Mail staff members, all nominated for being ‘1st Class.’
